Brown Horse Inn, Winster planning app for pods

A VILLAGE PUB AND HOSTEL near Windermere has begun construction of wooden modules for holiday accommodation.

The Brown Horse Inn, in Winster, is the subject of a planning application to construct a ‘utility building’ to support the addition of eight modules, the creation of which had already been approved by the Lake District National Park Authority in October 2021.

In the initial application for the construction of the modules, the applicant stated: “The proposal involves the siting of 8 wooden modules for 2 people – each module measures 6.8 meters by 3.4 meters and meets the legal definition of ‘a caravan.

“The Brown Horse is a long-established public house, set in extensive grounds, located on the north-east side of the A5074 in Winster.

“It includes a bar and a restaurant, as well as nine adjoining rental rooms.

“The business also includes four vacation rental cottages in the surrounding area and currently supports 15 full-time and ten part-time jobs, as well as six other local contractor jobs.

“Revenue from holiday rental units is a crucial element in supporting existing business and local employment, it being noted that the number of permanent residents in Winster is not sufficient to be able to sustain activity on their own .”
